CIA’s ‘Real Slim’ Interrogation Techniques

Harsh interrogation techniques authorized by top officials of the CIA have led to questionable confessions and the death of a detainee since the techniques were first authorized in mid-March 2002, ABC News has been told by former and current intelligence officers and supervisors.

They say they are revealing specific details of the techniques, and their impact on confessions, because the public needs to know the direction their agency has chosen. All gave their accounts on the condition that their names and identities not be revealed. Portions of their accounts are corrobrated by public statements of former CIA officers and by reports recently published that cite a classified CIA Inspector General’s report.

Other portions of their accounts echo the accounts of escaped prisoners from one CIA prison in Afghanistan.

“They would not let you rest, day or night. Stand up, sit down, stand up, sit down. Don’t sleep. Don’t lie on the floor,” one prisoner said through a translator. The detainees were also forced to listen to rap artist Eminem’s “Slim Shady” album. The music was so foreign to them it made them frantic, sources said.

Contacted after the completion of the ABC News investigation, CIA officials would neither confirm nor deny the accounts. They simply declined to comment.

The CIA sources described a list of six “Enhanced Interrogation Techniques” instituted in mid-March 2002 and used, they said, on a dozen top al Qaeda targets incarcerated in isolation at secret locations on military bases in regions from Asia to Eastern Europe. According to the sources, only a handful of CIA interrogators are trained and authorized to use the techniques:

1. The Attention Grab: The interrogator forcefully grabs the shirt front of the prisoner and shakes him.

2. Attention Slap: An open-handed slap aimed at causing pain and triggering fear.

3. The Belly Slap: A hard open-handed slap to the stomach. The aim is to cause pain, but not internal injury. Doctors consulted advised against using a punch, which could cause lasting internal damage.

4. Long Time Standing: This technique is described as among the most effective. Prisoners are forced to stand, handcuffed and with their feet shackled to an eye bolt in the floor for more than 40 hours. Exhaustion and sleep deprivation are effective in yielding confessions.

5. The Cold Cell: The prisoner is left to stand naked in a cell kept near 50 degrees. Throughout the time in the cell the prisoner is doused with cold water.

 6. Water Boarding: The prisoner is bound to an inclined board, feet raised and head slightly below the feet. Cellophane is wrapped over the prisoner’s face and water is poured over him. Unavoidably, the gag reflex kicks in and a terrifying fear of drowning leads to almost instant pleas to bring the treatment to a halt.

According to the sources, CIA officers who subjected themselves to the water boarding technique lasted an average of 14 seconds before caving in. They said al Qaeda’s toughest prisoner, Khalid Sheik Mohammed, won the admiration of interrogators when he was able to last between two and two-and-a-half minutes before begging to confess.

“The person believes they are being killed, and as such, it really amounts to a mock execution, which is illegal under international law,” said John Sifton of Human Rights Watch.

  • Haha, for real?

    • Brxnden…. No just… No. It is horrible how you find this funny. This is horrible to do to anyone guilty or not.

      • I agree, there’s nothing funny about doing this to anyone. Regardless of whether they’re guilty or not, resorting to these horrible acts is inhumane.

      • stop being a liberal pussy, these terrorist deserve the worst and if it wasnt for these techniques you might be alive, due to the information they didnt find.

  • emimnem is worst than all those things

  • also +rep Brxnden for having a sense of humor 🙂

  • When you are going to blow up a school full of children or commit mass murder, you give up your rights as a human being.

    • You can’t give up your right to life. Its impossible. You can give up your right to freedom but not your right to life.

  • were no better than anyone else, this is a shame to do to anyone…

  • How can you moan about not using these techniques even though they’re going to get information that could foil terrorist plans in the future?

  • Of course they deserve this if they’re al Qaeda. They chose that path so they get the consequences that come with that choice.

  • The chances that the information collected is false runs high, because the information is extracted by means of torture. Anyone being tortured will say anything. When an investigator goes into a session they are looking for an answer. If you don’t give them what they want to hear then they’ll do what is listed above. The prisoner will cave, at some point, and tell them the “truth”. And the “truth” would of course be what the investigator wants to hear. This is cruel and no matter what crime was committed they shouldn’t be tortured.

  • If your families would have been affected by these terrorists I think you’d see differently. They don’t give a shit they’ll shoot you without a look of compassion.

    And 2 and a half minutes?… Pussy

    • do you wanna go ahead and try being water boarded???

    • Many prisoners at Guantanemo Bay were apparently locked up there without trial or anything, purely on suspicion of being dangerous. To me that’s not right – and neither is what is effectively glorified torture.

As said above, info gained under this kind of duress has the potential to be unreliable too. I imagine the US feels pressure to reveal terrorist plots, but there must surely be alternative methods of intelligence to this.

There’s a moral line that we’re bound to as civilised human beings. If that’s crossed we have the disturbing potential to become more tyrannical than the people actually being “interrogated”.

  • You think that’s bad? Our methods of torture are a walk in the park compare to what those animals would do to us.

  • I believe those Terrorists are evil, and I was born and raised in Baghdad, Iraq. Now am a US citizen who lives in a gated community in Michigan, one of the most exclusive, price wise. And I love it here!!! However, the United States would look like a terrorist country to people who live in Iraq, or Afghanistan for example. See America claims not to use torture and they follow The Human Rights laws, but terrorists argue other wise, and that gives them a reason to be terrorists, gives them a claim that is proven for the world to see their view point; if America can do it and nobody is disallowing it, they say we should be able to do. The fact that a lot of people died in Iraq, a lot! and all because of False information that the United States fabricated. But they never apologize to the families who lost members, like mine, and that shows that American can do whatever it want, when ever it want, and how ever it want. And making America look like a parent to the world, however, the kids aka other countries will rebel and fight against it and attack it and tries to harm it. So If you think about it, even though I always thought Sep 11th was a horrible attack, the fact that America started to attack different countries first, controlling them first, and putting fear in their hearts first, and if you look up the word “Terrorist” you will see that what the American GOVERNMENT is doing is the definition of that word. BTW FYI the United States provided Al-Qaeda with weapons, including the very power Stinger, and which are now used by them against American forces. But America created them to fight the Soviets, same with Saddam Huessin to fight the Iranian government, same with Mubarak (former Egyptian president) to make peace with Israel. But they all turned against America and created wars that gave both sides a lot of dead bodies to count. If America want to be the world leader, it has to act as a world leader, and follow the Law that they helped built. Doing such acts might be good for getting information and killing terrorists, but it will only increase their numbers, and eventually more Americans and other world civilians will die.

  • You are all right we should not torture them… matter of fact we should just let them keep blowing shit up and running planes into buildings and continue to kill thousands of people and we should not do a thing about it cause that would just be so inhumane of us.

  • This is so terrible. If you were on the verge of death with these techniques, you would do anything to save your own life, even admit to something you didn’t do. Fuck bush, the CIA, and the American government. These innocent victims had to suffer because bush was in power and planned 9/11… He should be victimized, not “al qaeda”
